Body of chess champion Bobby Fischer exhumed for paternity tests as his former lovers battle over £1.3m estate

The body of troubled chess champion Bobby Fischer has been exhumed for tests to see if he is the father of a nine-year-old girl from the Philippines.
The corpse was dug up from a cemetery near Selfoss yesterday in the presence of a doctor, a priest and the local sheriff.
Sheriff Olafur Helgi Kjartansson said that Fischer was reburied after DNA samples were taken.

Mr Fischer, an American, died in Iceland in January 2008 aged 64. He left no will, and legal wrangling between two of his lovers continues over his estate.
Last month Iceland's supreme court ruled Fischer should be exhumed so DNA testing could determine whether he was the father of Jinky Young, whose mother Marilyn says she had a relationship with Fischer.
The pair are claiming two-thirds of his £1.3million fortune.
They have produced gifts and postcards from Fischer, signed ‘Daddy’, to support their story.
They are fighting a legal case against Miyoko Watai, the head of the Japanese Chess Association, who said she married the Grand Master. Fischer left no will when he died in 2008, aged 64, and Miss Watai was declared his heir.
Two of his nephews, Alexander and Nicholas Targ, have also filed a claim and the United States government is seeking settlement of unpaid taxes.

After his death from kidney failure, Fischer was buried in his adopted home of Iceland.
Miss Young had asked for samples of Fischer’s DNA from the National Hospital of Iceland, where he died, but none had been preserved.
Her evidence includes photographs and records showing that he gave her money in 2006 and 2007 for Jinky.
Under Icelandic law, the lawful wife gets one-third of the estate of a deceased person while the lawful child inherits the remaining two-thirds.
‘Bobby will turn in his grave if the inheritance of his daughter Jinky is not awarded by the Icelandic court,’ his friend Eugene Torre said.
‘I had seen with my two eyes how Bobby lovingly took care of Jinky during her infant days in Baguio, in the Philippines.’
Fischer became a Cold War hero in America by defeating Russia’s Boris Spassky in Iceland in 1972, but went on to hate his country.
He renounced his citizenship and said after the 9/11 attacks: ‘**** the U.S. I wanna see the U.S. wiped out.’

He fell foul of the U.S. authorities by playing and winning a rematch with his old foe Spassky in civil war-torn Yugoslavia in 1992, under threat of a ten-year jail term if he ever returned home.
He spent ten months in prison in Japan after his U.S. passport was revoked, before moving to Iceland in 2005.
Fischer started playing chess at six and was U.S. adult champion at 14 – a record that still stands.
He won the U.S. title in 1964 with a score of 11-0 – the only perfect scoreline in the tournament’s history – and spent 54 months as the world’s number one player.
Revealing that he liked to watch his opponents squirm, he said: ‘Chess is war on a board.
'The object is to crush the other man’s mind.’
